Film & Acting Camps in
Florence, Italy
ALL COURSES ARE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH! PRE-COLLEGE ENRICHMENT THROUGH FILM AND ACTING
This New York Film Academy teen summer camp program will be held amid the greatest artistic and architectural works of the renaissance, like Michelangelo's Medici Chapel, the Duomo, the church of Santa Maria Novella. Nearby, the bustling activity of Florence's central market helps give the city its vitality.
Florence, Italy, a city full of inspirational history and culture, is a captivating backdrop for any film. Often called the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence's ideas of beauty through architecture have had a worldwide impact, and the city has an impressive artistic legacy.
Florence is known as 'the jewel in the crown of Renaissance Italy', having been the home of such distinguished artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The city is small but remarkably beautiful, and mostly pedestrian. Walking is the most pleasant way to visit most destinations, and the narrow Mediterranean-styled streets and piazzas are full of locations for film shoots.
Situated in northwest Italy, surrounded by the wine-growing hills of Chianti, Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany. In Florence, The New York Film Academy teen summer camps will provide a stimulating educational experience that draws upon the rich cultural resources of both past and present Italy.
STAFF
The primary concerns of our staff are the safety and well-being of our students. In all our locales, our eclectic faculty is comprised of experienced instructors and professional filmmakers who have Master of Fine Arts degrees from the most prestigious film programs in the United States. These include NYU, Columbia University, the University of Southern California, and UCLA.
SUPERVISION
All New York Film Academy teen summer camps are supervised programs. High school students will be overseen by energetic, responsible, co-ed administrative, teaching, and counseling staff. Counselors live in the residence with the students. Many of the counselors are trained filmmakers themselves and will act as teaching assistants supervising the students' film productions.
Students are not required to reside on campus in order to attend the summer camp. In the past, many students have lived in the local area and commuted to class without a problem. To help us ensure their safety, commuting students must provide a letter from a parent or legal guardian, granting permission to come and go to campus.
ENROLLMENT
No previous filmmaking experience is required. The Academy encourages enrollment of students from all backgrounds and all parts of the world. Students, however, must be prepared to live and breathe film in an intensive total immersion Camp Program. As space is limited, an early application guarantees a place in the summer camp of your choice.
CURRICULUM
From the very first day of class, the focus of the Camp Program is to learn through making films. Each student writes, produces, directs, and edits his or her own films, and rotates among crew positions when his or her classmates shoot. Students in the Acting for Film Camp Program should expect to enjoy a similarly comprehensive program.
In the Four-Week Filmmaking Camp Program, each student makes three film projects of increasing difficulty, culminating in a film of up to four minutes. In the Four-Week Digital Filmmaking Camp Program students will make three projects of increasing difficulty including a short documentary.
DAILY SCHEDULE
Every Camp Program is full-time, with classes or shooting organized nearly every day of the week. The schedules are rigorous; however, students will have the opportunity to explore Florence.
EQUIPMENT
Students in the Filmmaking summer camps shoot 16mm film with Arriflex-S cameras and portable Lowel lighting packages for every shoot. Students in the Digital Filmmaking summer camps shoot with digital cameras on DV tape. In both programs students edit digitally using Final Cut Pro on Apple computers.
The equipment our Film Academy students use is comparable to that of the leading degree programs in the United States.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
NYFA students will have the opportunity to take field trips to important sites all around Tuscany. Destinations may include Fiesole; Volterra and San Gimignano; Pisa and Lucca; and Siena. These outings are conducted and chaperoned by Film Academy staff.
In Florence, NYFA students will certainly visit the Galleria dell' Accademia, where Michelangelo's David is housed, as well as other noted Renaissance works of art. The Cathedral Museum also includes in its collection some of the finest examples of Renaissance art found anywhere in the world, including work by Michelangelo, Donatello, and Leonardo da Vinci. Florence has abundant bookshops, internet cafes, coffee bars, restaurants, cinemas, and stores.
HOUSING
Every summer, the New York Film Academy arranges for convenient and comfortable housing in a residential hotel in the historical center of Florence. Rooms are double occupancy, and supervised by our staff.
FOOD
Near the school there are also a number of good inexpensive eating places. Please see your student handbook for specific recommendations. You can reasonably expect to spend $10-$15 per day on food if you prepare your own meals. Eating in restaurants, of course, is considerably more expensive, ranging from $25-$45 a day.
FINAL SCREENING / PORTFOLIO
At the conclusion of all filmmaking teen summer camps, a screening of the students' final films is held. This provides a unique opportunity for family, friends, and cast to see the work students have produced. Students retain the 16mm originals and a copy of their work to include in their portfolios. Each student, upon successful completion of the program, receives a diploma.
