WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

The New York Film Academy was designed for a new generation of filmmakers, screenwriters, actors, producers and animators who share a passion for motion pictures and want to learn by making their own projects in a hands-on, intensive program. We are not only a New York film school, we are international, with programs all over the world and an incredibly diverse student body. Please browse our location pages to learn more about our exciting campuses worldwide.

Traditional film schools often delay the moment when students get their hands-on the cameras and actually make movies.

At the Academy you will learn by doing from day one. Whether you enroll in a four-week filmmaking workshop or our one-year film directing program you will write, shoot, direct, and edit your own short films. Your teachers will demystify the craft of film production and challenge you to master the art of visual storytelling.

Unlike many acting schools, our programs are integrated within our film school. Our acting school combines traditional training with consistent exposure of working in front of the camera.
Many digital video production schools put technology before creativity we reverse that equation in our digital film school. Students master the use of DV Cameras, lights, and digital editing systems in so far as it serves the needs of their stories.

In our screenwriting workshops each student writes a feature screenplay.

Our one-year program is more than a screenwriting class. In order to write the best possible film script (in fact they write two screenplays and a television spec script), these students explore film craft, acting, pitching, and editing in a fully-integrated curriculum.

Within the Academy, our computer animation school trains students to work with Maya; an intensive 3D animation program. This powerful software gives students the opportunity to animate at a professional level.

Whatever the craft, the New York Film Academy holds that audiences respond to cinematic wizardry only when it serves the story, when the actors and characters are compelling, and when the filmmaker integrates the magic with the meaning.

Filmmaking Program Summary

In the creation of our curriculum, we worked with students and faculty from around the world. We adapted the best ideas and elements from the top film schools and designed an alternative which provides a thorough grounding in filmmaking, and is also flexible in meeting the diverse needs of our students.

The art and craft of film is taught through a balance of classroom instruction, hands-on film workshops, and immediate directing experience. From the first day of class, students are behind the camera, learning by doing.

Filmmaking Student Profile

The NYFA Film School

First and foremost a filmmaker is a storyteller. Film directors are confronted with a number of visual, dramatic, and technical challenges. Our goal is to empower students to artfully tell their stories.

In all of our filmmaking workshops, students write, produce, direct, and edit their own films. Students assist other members of their crews in the roles of director of photography,
assistant cameraperson, and gaffer/grip, providing everyone with extensive set experience.

Learning to be a filmmaker is not done "by the numbers." It is done by immersion in the process and by knowing the "whys" that teach the "hows." It is done by hands-on experience, trial and error, feedback and correction, and questions and answers.
