Preparation Format Topics Covered

All students enrolling in the Intensive One-Week Modeling the Torso Workshop should be aware that this is an introductory course. The limitation of a one-week course should be apparent, given that many people spend years studying and perfecting their craft.

PREPARATION

A basic understanding of how to use computers is recommended. No previous Maya experience is necessary, but is beneficial.

Students will come away with a modeled human body.

FORMAT

Students will use the Maya polygon modeling toolset to create a human body. With a focus on modeling for rigging, students study the anatomy of the torso and how to create a polygon mesh that reflects the actual muscle and skeletal structure of the body. Students will start with a lo-poly human skeleton and build the surface muscles on top of it. These muscles will then be combined to create the poly surface that is the skin. Through this process students develop their sculptural skills while learning how their work feeds into the whole animation pipeline, particularly what kind of mesh will make a rigger happy, and what will make the riggers curse them out of a job. Note, the face and limbs will not be covered in this class.

ANIMATION TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE
• Human anatomy
• Polygon modeling
• Edge Loops
• Image planes as modeling guides
• Modeling for rigging
• Low polygon and hi polygon proxy modeling
