Audio Recording & Sound Design Program

The sound recording and audio design industry is exciting and varied. The Film Academy has designed this intensive one-year program to train students for the evolving landscape of audio production.

Students will explore location sound recording, post-production sound editing, studio recording for music, live music recording and much more. Students will begin the program with a broad exposure to the different areas of audio and will then have the opportunity to focus on a specific audio discipline. Students will be exposed to recording and sound production techniques and concepts in a comprehensive way that will allow them to pursue a recording arts career with confidence and ability.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS  
Principals of Sound
This course gives a deep understanding of the basic principals and characteristics of sound waves and how the various tools that capture and manipulate them work.

Principals of Acoustics
A deeper look into the science of sound and how these waves of vibration interact with matter.

Location Sound Recording I
The basics of sound recording on location for narrative film / tv, and documentary, using wired and wireless microphones, portable mixers, and recorders.

Location Sound Recording II
Advanced sound recording on location for narrative film / tv, and documentary, using the tools of Sound Recording I with the addition of multi-track recorders and timecode. Included is training for music videos, frequency coordination, as well as learning to build your own portable recorder using a laptop.

Post Sound Editing for Picture
Using industry standard programs (ProTools / Logic) and techniques to edit dialogue, create sound effects, and edit foley to create a sound-scape for film and tv.

Post Sound Mastering for Picture
5.1 surround sound mixing and finishing techniques using large format studio mixing boards and automation to create a professional quality final mix. Also reviews different encoding options including DTS, Dolby E, SDDS and more.

Studio Recording for Picture
Studio recording techniques for Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR), foley, and sound effects.

Studio Recording for Music
From the single microphone home made studios to a large professional setting you will be able to do it all. Create music from scratch tracking with one microphone at a time or record large bands in studio.

Live Music Recording
Live music recording and mixing is an important part of New York City's indie music scene. Learn live on location with real bands at real venues front of house mixing and recording for the best concert and in concert CD's.

Mastering for Music
Create polished and professional music from your studio and live recordings using various digital and analog effects and mixing techniques to blend vocals and instruments together seamlessly.

Internships
This is step one in job placement and on-the-job training. Internships are highly recommended for all students. Whether they intern at a music studio, film/tv production, equipment rental company, or film/tv post production company, this hands on experience is one of the most valuable lessons any sound professional can receive.

Evening Lecture Series
The New York Film Academy will host this master class that brings the biggest names in film/tv sound and music to the New York Film Academy.
