busy. He has just completed shooting for a short film that has been directed by a film student from the New York Film Academy Film School. The working title of the film is Dukandar and has Azhar playing the protagonist. While the little bundle of talent is excited about having shot for the movie, the film’s producers feel that his performance has packed in enough punch to fetch accolades at the international film festivals.
Says producer Priti Sagar Singh, “The script of Dukandar was written much before SM released. When director Amritpal Singh Bindra watched the film, he completely fell in love with Azhar. Unlike Slumdog where Azhar is part of the cast, this 20-minute long film revolves solely around Azhar’s character.”…full story.

The 2006 Miss Ethiopia Amleset Muchie currently studying filmmaking at New York Film Academy is making a documentary on the life of President Girma Wolde-Giorgis.

The one-hour long documentary which is a school project for the actress, model and director would chronicle a day in the life of the president as told by himself, close associates and her own commentary. The 84-year-old president who holds a symbolic office with little power has authorized Amleset to come and document him. Amleset is hoping to start shooting soon and have it ready in months’ time. The doc would be premiered at the Film Academy and other festivals.

Film School Graduate Janice Perez Accepted To Cannes Film Festival

Published on May 7, 2009

Inquirer.net – MANILA, Philippines—It was an auspicious e-mail. Returning from Easter Vigil Mass, New York-based Filipino filmmaker Janice Y. Perez checked her inbox and found a message that made her heart skip.

“I saw these words in big letters: ‘See you in Cannes and welcome to the Short Film Corner,’” she told Inquirer in an e-mail interview.

It was surprising, she said, especially since her short film, “Sabongero,” took a circuitous route to the premier world fest.

Before she could shoot this dream project, many doors were closed for Perez. She even lost a grant because the script tackled cockfighting in her home province of Cebu, a pastime considered cruel by animal activists.

Perez, an accountant by profession, remained steadfast. Three years ago, she had just come out of the New York Film Academy. In a 2006 forum hosted by the Independent Feature Project, she found her Eureka moment.

“One of the panelists, filmmaker Dito Montiel, told the audience at Lincoln Center: ‘If you want to make your first feature, write a story you know nothing about. That will make you want to get to know it more…full article.

Film School Student Min Mei Comments on Her Experience At The New York Film Academy

Published on May 6, 2009

I experienced being a director and an actress in my own films and the films made by my classmates, which was really interesting! I learned to be on time for classes and shoots, to be responsible for other crew members, because that is how I got the same respect from them. Team work is one of the most important aspects of filmmaking. Making films is a very demanding and stressful job which takes an incredible amount of time. But when your films come out and win applause from the audience, your films become a very effective form of self-expression.

I love the teachers and teacher’s assistants of NYFA. They are very, very friendly, helpful, and encouraging! NYFA is a very good and stable film community. I will stay in contact with the people in this community after graduation.

Former Summer Film Camp Student Daniel Citron’s Recent Success

Published on April 10, 2009

Daniel Citron, a student from the New York Film Academy summer 2008 Advanced Teen Film Camp, shared with us his success at a number of recent film festivals.

Hey everyone! Emailing to say that last week I went to the Vail Film Festival to see Out of the Water screen. The theater was completely packed and it got a great response. The other filmmakers of the shorts in my screening got caught in the snow storm and couldn’t make it, so at the Q&A, all the questions (except one) were about Out of the Water! There were many comments on how powerful the performances of the actors were and how well the story was told. Independent filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, etc.) was also there, and I managed to get him interested in the film and give him a copy, so he is going to email me when he gets a chance to watch it.

I had also submitted into the student section of the West Chester Film Festival, but the president of the festival just emailed me to tell me how much he liked the film and that he would like to put it in the adult section instead! I’d like to thank everyone for all of the work and commitment they put into this film, to make it as powerful as it is today.

I’ll keep everyone posted!

Hope all is well,
Daniel Citron

Film School Students Dreams Come True

Published on September 7, 2007

From The Advertiser Publication – WORKING three jobs simultaneously and pouring her heart and soul into following her dreams has paid off for Adelaide’s Charmaine Kuhn.

Later this month will take up residence at the prestigious New York Film Academy Film School.

The driven 22-year-old from Aberfoyle Park – who will begin her one year filmmaking course on her 23rd birthday – will be studying at the New York Film Academy’s LA campus which is based in the Universal Studios lot.

But despite the dream career break, Charmaine’s lucrative spot at one of the world’s best film schools didn’t happen by chance.

“I’ve always been brought up with the motto `If they don’t laugh at your dreams, they’re not big enough’,” Charmaine says.

“I came across the New York Film Academy course four or five years ago (but) I was too young then.”

Refusing to be deterred, Charmaine enrolled in a local filmmaking course to gain experience and also befriended New Zealand film industry great Richard Taylor – who worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Peter Jackson – for valuable insider tips. It had been several years since she had come across the New York Film Academy course when Charmaine decided the time was right to apply. She plans to return to SA and “make a feature film here”.
