New York Film Academy Graduate Appears on Ellen DeGeneres Show!

Published on November 7, 2011

NYFA Graduate Mazey Aud appears in pop star Greyson Chance’s video “Waiting Outside the Lines”

New York Film Academy graduate Mazey Aud says a recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show has been a great highlight of her young and budding career in the entertainment industry. The teen was featured in pop star Greyson Chance’s debut video “Waiting Outside of the Lines” last year and appeared onstage with Greyson when he performed live on the Ellen show. “[Ellen] gave me a hug and said she liked my perfume,” gushes Aud, 15. “Justin Bieber was there that day too and he came backstage.”

Mazey did a one-week high school program at NYFA Disney during which time she produced and directed her own short film. Her other body of work includes an adopted children PSA entitled, “Angel Arms,” an appearance on the Nickelodeon show “Brainsurge,” and starring in a video series entitled “Children First.” In addition, the ambitious teen will release a book next fall of original monologues. “I love to write,” she said. “I noticed when I was trying to pick out a monologue for my auditions, I had a hard time finding one that sounded like something a teenager would really say. I started writing my own, and then I really started getting into it and I have ended up with a collection of them.” We look forward to seeing more of Mazey’s televised appearances!

Published on June 3, 2011

Actress Aubrey Plaza

Actress Aubrey Plaza has hit it big since taking a New York Film Academy High School Hands-On Summer Workshop. In the past three months, Aubrey has been a featured guest (with hilarious interviews) on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Lopez Tonight with George Lopez. Her list of costars has grown to include Amy Poehler, Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler, Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Jonah Hill, and Jason Schwartzman. Aubrey is currently filming Safety Not Guaranteed with Kristen Bell and has signed on to film The Hand Job with Christopher Mintz-Plasse (more commonly known as “McLovin” from Superbad) and Andy Samberg (of SNL favorite’s comedy troupe the Lonely Island).

Aubrey Plaza stars on NBC’s Parks and Recreation with SNL star Amy Poehler

So what makes this NYFA graduate a star? Jarrett Wieselman of New York Post comments, “Aubrey isn’t a bubbly, gum-chewing 20-something who tacks a giggle on the end of her sentences and dots her I’s with hearts. She’s smart, dry and totally sarcastic…Aubrey is one of the most disarmingly hilarious people I’ve ever had the chance to interview.”

Aubrey Plaza stars as Julie Powers in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Aubrey stars as April Ludgate on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, recognized as one of the top ten TV shows in TIME, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and People Magazine. Her feature film career includes playing Seth Rogen’s love interest in Funny People and Julie Powers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. This May, Aubrey beat actresses Christina Ricci, Ellen Page, Janeane Garofalo, Liz Lee, Zooey Deschanel, and Thora Birch in a MTV poll of who viewers would hope to be cast as Daria in a live action movie. As Labor Day nears, the New York Film Academy, is officially wrapping up our summer programs. We had a great time at all of our locations – New York City, Universal Studios in Los Angeles, Harvard University, Disney, Japan, Paris and Florence – and are grateful to our host campuses for helping us bring film and acting education to all corners of the world. We were especially happy to receive so much positive feedback from the tweens and teens who decided to spend their summer learning at our Film and Acting Camps. It was a pleasure working with all of you!

Over the course of the summer we had some great guest speakers. Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, (Doubt, Capote, Magnolia), and legendary director Abel Ferrara, (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York), each took time out to meet and speak with our students. We were also lucky enough to have director Doug Liman, (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Bourne Identity, Swingers), come in as a guest speaker as well.

We are also proud to report a successful first summer at the New York Film Academy Café at Astor Place in downtown Manhattan. In the past few months, we’ve expanded our selection from Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea to a variety of snacks, pastries and now crepes. We encourage everyone to come visit!

Over the past week, the faculty and staff of the New York Film Academy have proudly watched several of our classes graduate. The screenings of student film and acting work were both rewarding and bittersweet. While it’s a great feeling to see how far our students have come over the part year or two of study, it’s never easy to see everyone go.

With the departure of our summer 2010 graduates, come the arrival of several new classes of NYFA students. We welcome all our new students and look forward to working with you to strengthen your various crafts.

Here’s to a good fall at the New York Film Academy!

The New York Film Academy recently played host to Jackson Messer, winner of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation’s (CNCF) Young Image Makers Short Film Competition. The CNCF started the Young Image Makers program to give teens the opportunity to explore filmmaking as a career. As the first place winner, Jackson was awarded an all-expenses paid trip to attend the New York Film Academy 1-Week Teen Filmmaking Program sponsored by the Cayman Islands Film Commission’s (CIFC). Jackson reported back on the fun he had hanging out with us and learning film in New York City:

All the NYFA staff and boarders were so nice and welcoming. I have met so many people from all over the world including Italy, Spain, Canada, USA, Iceland, South Korea, Puerto Rico, Russia, Austria and England. The classes were long and very informative with hands-on exercises and on the third day we actually hit the streets of New York City and I shot my short film. We received instructions in editing film on final Cut Pro which I know will be extremely beneficial to me as I continue with my career.

Programmes Manager Rita Estevanovich commented, “We’re very pleased with the programme’s debut. I am happy that Jackson Messer, the first recipient of the coveted NYFA Summer Movie Camp scholarship enjoyed every minute of his time in New York, and is enthused to continue developing his skills in the field.”

We’re glad you had a good time learning filmmaking with us, Jackson!

LA Magazine: NYFA Teen Program Best Summer Camp

Published on July 22, 2010

LA Magazine has named the New York Film Academy’s High School Filmmaking Program Best Summer Camp in their Best of LA issue. This is what the magazine has to say about the teen film camp experience.

Personal Best – Film School

“I can’t watch a movie the same way anymore,” says Breeana Kovelman. “I think, ‘That’s a good shot. Look at that angle!’” The 14-year-old got a new perspective on filmmaking – a hobby since seven – after attending New York Film Academy’s High School Summer Camp. “In the first hour of our first class, I operated a dolly,” she says, “and what better teachers? They all work in the industry.” Her parents had chosen NYFA’s 12 weekend $1,500 program after viewing film school websites. An open house on the Universal back lot where the classes take place sealed the deal. “Trams pass by while you’re filming , and someone says, ‘There’s the next Steven Spielberg!’” HD cameras, access to locations like Jaws Lake and teachers for screenwriting, storyboarding and lighting were all a step up from projects she’d made at home (and in which she was producer, director and star) or at her elementary school film camp (think: Star Wars meets Harry Potter). Kovelman’s first NYFA film was a five-minute romantic comedy with seven speaking roles. The novice director enjoyed the experience so much, she signed up for a second year of the program. “I decided to work on my cinematography. The second film I made has just two line of dialogue.

Breeana we’re glad you had such a good time at our Universal Studios camp! We work hard to ensure a great learning experience for our students and your wonderful feedback is truly appreciated. And thank you to our NYFA camp staff in Los Angeles for all their hard work!

Letter From Film Camp Student Adrienne Ho

Published on April 23, 2009

New York Film Academy summer film camp student Adrienne Ho continues to grow as a filmmaker and excel in film festivals from New York to Montreal.

As a current film student at McGill University in Montreal, she has received great praise for her short film “Coming Back” she made while attending our film camp in Los Angeles during the summer of 2007.

“Coming Back” is a short film Told through a series of flashbacks, Laura, a teenaged girl, is brought to places from her past by her sister Stephanie. Each time, Laura is urged by Stephanie to try and remember the place’s significance. However, it is only at the last place, where Laura finally willingly accepts her past on her terms.

We are very proud of Adrienne and the success she has made for herself. We wish her the very best in her career in film! Below is a her film “Coming Back” and a letter she wrote us recently.

Dear Eric,

I was in your class in August 2007 for a three-week digital filmmaking program in LA  (Universal Studios) at NYFA.

I know it is a long time ago, but my second film that I made got selected for the NewFilmmakers New York Spring Festival. Thank you so much for your help and advice at that time, especially for recommending the theme song. To refresh your memory, here is a link for it (I submitted it to a film fest at McGill University that posted selected entries online).

As well, my documentary, Pura Vida!, won in the non-fiction category at the McGill film festival.

Thank you for being such a great teacher!

Best Regards.

Sincerely yours,
Adrienne Ho

Young Filmmaker Zac Wong Receives Great Reviews

Published on April 13, 2009

Every year the New York Film Academy summer film camps instruct teenagers who go on to make independent films during camp and shortly after graduation who find success in student film festivals throughout the world. When we hear about their success as a filmmaker it gives us an overwhelming sense of pride

Here is an update the mother of Zac Wong, a young and talented filmmaker who has studied at our film camps in 2007 and 2008.

My son Zachary Wong was in your teen film camp program for the last two years and it was a great experience for him. Afterwards, he then made a short film” NOT WITHOUT MY DOG” at age 12.

“Not Without My Dog” Trailer from Zac Wong on Vimeo.

The film was beautifully shot with a 16mm camera in black and white.

In 2008, this film was officially selected to Los Angeles International Children’s Film Festival, San Diego International Children’s Festival, Kid’s First, and was nominated for best picture at Young Cuts International Film Festival at Montreal. The reception was overwhelming in Canada and US, he got to speak to the audience and answer questions about his film and his film making experiences. Top Canadian producers were there and just loved this film. It was also written up in the “Montreal Gazette” ( Canadian newspaper), with great reviews; comparing his film with Buster Keaton’s films.

We thought you might like to know about this and feature this on your website as you often do when your student brought success to inspire other young film makers.

His experience with the New York Film Academy was fantastic. He was greatly inspired by your wonderfully supportive faculty and staff.

Zachary’s goal is to become a filmmaker, and is continuously making films. These day’ he is working on two animation films.

Best regards,
May Wong

Congratulations Zac! We all wish you the very best in your future filmmaking. We are looking forward to seeing how your animation films turn out.
