Learn How To Pitch Your Film & Screenplay
May 11th, 2009 Posted in Film Producing School, Film School, Screenwriting SchoolBy Jason Brubaker - If you happen to be a new filmmaker, you are in luck! You are now entering one of the greatest periods in filmmaking history. Never before has technology allowed so many filmmakers to pick up a camera and at the push of a button, distribute their work to audiences all over the world.
But even with these advances, if you want to make money making movies you now have to learn a thing or two about business (and not just show business). The following three tips took me years to learn. Yet following this advice has allowed me to jump into Hollywood without asking permission.
1. Read and learn everything you can about business and how to network. This will help you find potential investors and heavy hitters, communicate your business with confidence and also, enable you to run your own filmmaking company.
2. If you ever find yourself in-between movie projects and low on funds, find a sales job. If you can learn how to sell, pitching your projects and screenplays will be a cinch. Plus, with the right sales job, you could set your own hours and make good money… One summer I was able to finance my first movie from sales proceeds.
3. Study marketing. The future of distribution means more filmmakers will become their own distribution solution. If you understand how to market, especially on the internet, you’ll be able to reach your intended audience more effectively than your competition.
In the following weeks, I will expand on these ideas. In the meantime, happy filmmaking!
