Film School Students Dreams Come True

Published on September 7, 2007

From The Advertiser Publication – WORKING three jobs simultaneously and pouring her heart and soul into following her dreams has paid off for Adelaide’s Charmaine Kuhn.

Later this month will take up residence at the prestigious New York Film Academy Film School.

The driven 22-year-old from Aberfoyle Park – who will begin her one year filmmaking course on her 23rd birthday – will be studying at the New York Film Academy’s LA campus which is based in the Universal Studios lot.

But despite the dream career break, Charmaine’s lucrative spot at one of the world’s best film schools didn’t happen by chance.

“I’ve always been brought up with the motto `If they don’t laugh at your dreams, they’re not big enough’,” Charmaine says.

“I came across the New York Film Academy course four or five years ago (but) I was too young then.”

Refusing to be deterred, Charmaine enrolled in a local filmmaking course to gain experience and also befriended New Zealand film industry great Richard Taylor – who worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Peter Jackson – for valuable insider tips. It had been several years since she had come across the New York Film Academy course when Charmaine decided the time was right to apply. She plans to return to SA and “make a feature film here”.
