FILM SCHOOL - LONDON, ENGLAND

We are excited to offer our workshops including four and six-week filmmaking, four and one-week digital filmmaking and four and one-week acting for film.

London enters the 21st century with a reputation as the place to be. With an incredibly active theater and cinema culture, it is the ideal home for the New York Film Academy programs in England. In the midst of an exciting modern revival, London invites the developing artist to join in its bustling energy. With such new attractions as the Tate Modern, filled with the avant garde sculptures of Louise Bourgeois, and others, or the sleek new financial center, and revitalized Docklands with its ultra-modern railway system, London stands out as a city on the creative edge. The more traditional sites remain as well, of course: Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Regent’s Park, and the British Museum, to name but a few.

Britain has produced some of the greatest films and film talents in the history of the movies—great directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Powell, David Lean and actors like Lawrence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Vivien Leigh, Alec Guiness, Peter O’Toole, and Vanessa Redgrave.
Some of America’s greatest filmmakers have found England to be the best place to make their films; George Lucas made Star Wars there. Stanley Kubrick made most of his greatest films in England, including Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. In London, New York Film Academy students will plunge headlong into this great tradition and try their own hand at filmmaking.

The great cities and sights of Europe such as Paris, Rome, and Berlin are easily reached from London. Students may want to schedule a longer stay in order to travel.

Curriculum

In the 16mm and digital film workshops, each student writes, produces, directs, and digitally edits his or her own films, and rotates among crew positions when his or her classmates shoot. Students receive extensive hands-on experience as a result. Four and Six-week workshop students make three films each.

Students can receive college credits for attending the New York Film Academy Workshops at London. Please contact us for details.

Daily Schedule

Every workshop is full-time, with classes or shooting organized nearly every day of the week. The schedules are rigorous; however, students will have the opportunity to explore London.

Extra-Curricular Activities

In London, the past and the future collide to result in a brilliant present filled with possibility. Students can take a location tour aboard a boat on the Thames that highlights the history of London and ends in Greenwich where they will find the atmosphere of Old London.

Equipment

Students in the Filmmaking Workshops shoot 16mm film with Arriflex-S cameras and portable Lowel lighting packages for every shoot.

Students in the Digital Filmmaking Workshops shoot on digital video. All filmmaking students edit digitally using Final Cut Pro on Macintosh computers.

The equipment our Film Academy students use is comparable to that of the leading degree programs in the United States.

Enrollment

The New York Film Academy has an open enrollment. Serious students from all backgrounds are welcome to apply. No previous experience is required. However, all New York Film Academy Workshops are extremely intensive. Students who enroll should be prepared to live and breathe their work during these workshops. Given the nature of filmmaking and the necessity of working in crews, students must be willing to devote themselves not only to their own projects, but to their classmates’ projects as well. As space is limited, we recommend early application to guarantee a place in the workshop of your choice.
