FILM SCHOOL - FLORENCE, ITALY

Situated in northwest Italy, surrounded by the wine-growing hills of Chianti, Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany. In Florence, The New York Film Academy workshops will be held in the heart of a city with the greatest artistic and architectural works of the renaissance, such as Medici Chapel, the Laurentian Library, and the Duomo.

Florence, full of inspirational history and culture, is a captivating backdrop for any film. Often called the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence’s ideas of beauty through architecture have had a worldwide impact. The city has an impressive artistic legacy, having been the home of such distinguished artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. For several hundred years it has served as a center of artistic excellence.

The city is small but remarkably beautiful. Within the city’s limits, sprawled on either side of the river Arno, a visitor can wander from the Cathedral to the famous Uffizi gallery. The bustling activity of Florence’s central market helps give the city its vitality. Mostly pedestrianized, walking is a pleasant way to visit most destinations, and the narrow Mediterranean-styled streets and piazzas are full of locations for film shoots.

Facilities

The New York Film Academy has been invited by the government of Tuscany to hold our programs in a renovated renaissance era building, Palazzo Santa Apollonia, in the center of the city, moments away from the Duomo itself. We feel it is an extraordinary setting to learn the art and craft of filmmaking.

Language

All courses are taught in English. However, interested students should take the opportunity to work on their conversational Italian during the program. This will enrich their understanding and enjoyment of Italy.

Daily Schedule

Every workshop is full-time, with classes or shooting organized nearly every day of the week. The schedules are rigorous; however, students will have the opportunity to explore Florence.

Extra-Curricular Activities

In Florence, students will enjoy the Galleria dell’ Accademia, where Michelangelo’s David is housed, as well as other noted Renaissance works of art. The Cathedral Museum also includes in its collection some of the finest examples of Renaissance art found anywhere in the world, including work by Michelangelo, Donatello, and Leonardo da Vinci.

There are also bookshops, Internet cafes, coffee bars, restaurants, the world’s best gelato, cinemas, and a myriad of stores. Our film school is also near the train station, in the full bustle of the city center. Destinations could include Venice, Rome, Fiesole, and Sienna.

Equipment

Students in the Filmmaking Workshops shoot 16mm film with Arriflex-S cameras and portable Lowel lighting packages for every shoot.

Students in the Digital Filmmaking Workshops shoot on digital video. All students edit digitally using Final Cut Pro on Macintosh computers. The equipment our Film Academy students use is comparable to that of the leading degree programs in the United States.

Instructors

In all our locales, our eclectic faculty is comprised of experienced instructors and professional filmmakers who have Master of Fine Arts degrees from the most prestigious film programs in the United States. These include New York University, Columbia University, the University of Southern California, and UCLA.

Final Screening & Portfolio

At the conclusion of all filmmaking workshops, a screening of the students’ final films is held. This provides a unique opportunity for family, friends, and cast to see the work students have produced. Students retain the 16mm originals and a digital master tape of their work to include in their portfolios. Each student, upon successful completion of the program, receives a diploma.
